A fun read-aloud romp!

A boisterious bedtime read, as Josh's books duke it out to see who will get picked for the bedtime read. Fantastic text filled with "in character" dialogue, smack talk, rhymes, and puns. The lively colorful illustrations heighten the raucous energy. Top-shelf pick!

Family Reading Fun

I was a big fan of Melanie Ellsworth’s book CLARINET and TRUMPET, so I really looked forward to this one. Language is Ellsworth’s playground, and my Little and I enjoy her humor, clever ideas, and flip-the-script concepts. In this tale, anthropomorphised books battle to be the chosen book for story time. Littles will enjoy predicting who will win–and when Grandma enters the scene with her own suggestion–will want to turn the page to find out if Grandma’s book is the victor. Teachers can use this book to talk with their students about what books vie for their attention at night and why. They can create a class list of books that battle for the class’s attention. Students can practice persuasive writing by arguing why their choice is the best. The winning books can be read and enjoyed by all. Sanchez’s illustrations are bright and inviting.

Top-shelf-worthy book in every child's room

What a fun and humorous book! Each character (book) is full of personality specific to the type of book they represent, it's such a creative way to bring them to life! The engaging narrative has each of these books fighting for the optimal position on their boy Josh's shelf; the text is chock-full of clever puns; and the illustrations are so fun and lively. I especially love the ending, I'm not going to spoil it so I won't type anymore, but I do think it's a very sweet and relatable ending. This book is definitely top-shelf-worthy in every child's room!

A Fun Way to Do Battle!

For those elementary school librarians who host any sort of voting on state book award lists or have "battle of the books" type activity, this would be a fun read aloud to share the concept of having all sorts of books for all sorts of readers (or even moods). Full of clever wordplay and fun puns, this book is guaranteed to get a laugh from kids!

Super fun readaloud

A hilarious take on the bedtime routine of choosing a book. In this story, the books each try make their case, until they make the pirate book walk the plank. I love the snappy dialog--each book has a voice befitting of its genre--and the illustrations by James Rey Sanchez are phenomenal. Super fun readaloud.
