Jinger Vuolo, the sixth child in the famous Duggar family of TLC's 19 Kids and Counting and Counting On, recounts how she began to question the unhealthy ideology of her youth and learned to embrace true freedom in Christ. When Jinger Duggar Vuolo was growing up, she was convinced that obeying the rules was the key to success and God's favor. She zealously promoted the Basic Life Principles of Bill Got hard, fastidiously obeying the modesty guidelines (no shorts or jeans, only dresses), eagerly submitting to the umbrella of authority (any disobedience of parents would place her outside God's protection), promoting the relationship standard of courtship, and avoiding any music with a worldly beat, among others. Jinger, along with three of her sisters, wrote a New York Times bestseller about their religious convictions. She believed this level of commitment would guarantee God's blessing, even though in private she felt constant fear that she wasn't measuring up to the high standards demanded of her. In Becoming Free Indeed, Jinger shares how in her early twenties, a new family member a brother-in-law who didn't grow up in the same tight-knit conservative circle as Jinger caused her to examine her beliefs. He was committed to the Bible, but he didn't believe many of the things Jinger had always assumed were true.

Hopeful and Inspiring

Jinger Duggar Vuolo recounts her years-long journey of disentangling true Christianity from the cult-like church she grew up in. I have so many thoughts on this one that this could easily go on a rambling tangent, but I'll try to be concise. This is the book I didn't know I needed right now, not because I felt she was speaking to me particularly, but because her message beautifully counters the current sad stories I hear repeatedly in popular culture. I'll preface my thoughts by noting that I have never watched either of the reality shows the author starred in. I had heard of them and have seen a few clips of the first show - not more than 10 minutes total. I'm not a huge television watcher and have no interest in reality shows. I hear the au courant catch-phrase "religious trauma" bandied about relentlessly to describe those who have been traumatized by people, not religion or God. I love how the author describes her journey as "disentangling" because that is exactly what she does so well in this book. She disentangles cult teachings and people with evil intentions from true Christian faith. What she does is so much harder than simply leaving the faith. She puts the blame solely where it belongs, on those who manipulated her and steered her on a wrong path. She doesn't even blame those who were caught up in the cult and manipulated alongside her, even those who brought her into the cult. She understands that her parents had the best intentions and wanted only good things for her and were bamboozled just as she was. This is a strong young woman who has done some deep soul-searching and scripture reading and has come out the other side. She is inspiring. I will recommend this book to anyone I hear spout the phrase "religious trauma" in the future. Be forewarned. I especially love how she is not afraid to point her finger exactly where the blame lies no matter how much push back she gets. It is hard to leave a cult. She knows she will lose friends. She knows her name will be smeared. She is strong enough to take it. I can't recommend this book enough. It is the most hopeful and inspiring thing I've read all year.

A great resource for former Gothard Followers!

"Becoming Free Indeed" by Jinger Duggar Vuolo is a fascinating and inspiring book about self-discovery and development. Anybody who has suffered with legalism or strict religious rules should read this book, particularly those who followed all of Bill Gothard's teachings. Jinger's honesty and vulnerability shine through as she recounts her childhood that valued compliance to man-made rules. She frankly discusses her battles with anxiety and disordered eating as she struggled to meet these standards and how it affected her mental and emotional health. Jinger's path to freedom from legalism, fear, and anxiety along with a grace-based relationship with Jesus Christ is the book's focus. She credits her transformation to authentically studying the Bible study. Her engaging language and personal stories make the book's message relatable to all readers. "Being Free Indeed" will inspire and encourage you whether you have struggled with gaining freedom from Gothard's teachings. Strongly recommended!

So helpful in my spiritual journey

I am so glad Jinger wrote this book. The book was well written and really helped me in some big ways. I was raised in a baptist (now reformed baptist) house hold and was taught to love God. My parents were very loving and have nothing to do with my issues but I have always struggled with self condemnation, an overactive conscience, and making up certain rules for myself that are just not biblical. Jinger helped me see that my relationship with Jesus is not supposed to be so legalistic. I don’t have to pray a certain way or think my every action will create a bad domino effect (like the art on the wall). I have 16 tabs in this book and I was holding back haha! I am so very glad I pre-ordered it and so glad that Jinger wrote it. I was not raised in the Gothard community but I needed to hear a lot of what she had to say and what the Bible has to say of certain areas in my life. May God bless her and her family! Also***I may have tagged unreliable author and I did NOT mean to if that shows up.
