Thankfully, her uncle has a remote cabin near a picturesque lake and Sam believes the change of scenery might help break the slump. She couldn't have guessed the dark secrets she was about to uncover. Review: If you're looking for a fast-paced thriller under 200 pages, I absolutely recommend Dead Lake. Coates managed to stuff an interesting paranomal thriller into just a couple hours worth of reading, which is no small feat.

Creepy, fun
This book was crazy, in all the good ways! The title story and four shorter stories contained supernatural elements and plenty of scares. The short stories, especially, turned in the last sentence, and implied the fate of the characters. They reminded me of the 1990s Nickelodeon show Are you afraid of the dark? Strong writing, especially in the stories where the main character was alone and couldn't progress the story with dialogue. This was my first Darcy Coates book, it definitely won't be the last! Disclaimer: I received a review copy of this book from the publisher, all opinions are my own.

Great for Horror Lovers
If you love the horror genre and stories that can give you the chills, this one might be for you! I was surprised to see that I was finishing Sam's story at about 50% of the way through the book. The main story is more of a novella, taking up the first half of the book, and then the second half is a collection of short stories. I wasn't aware of this going into the book, so it was a surprise when the book wrapped up so quickly! The writing really pulled me into the middle of the stories almost immediately. The pacing was what I'd expect from a thriller/suspense story. The characters in these stories are constantly putting themselves into situations and making decisions that seem counter to keeping safe, which I found frustrating as a reader. I don't typically read in the horror genre, so overall, these stories weren't for me, but they did keep me entertained and were an easy read! Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Enjoyable creepy read!!
Struggling artist Sam has been offered an opportunity of a lifetime—a showing of her artwork at a prestigious gallery that could either make or break her career. But as with all things in life, when one path takes you to the realm of possibilities, a roadblock pops up, and in Sam’s case, it is caring for her terminally ill mother. After her passing, Sam is left with a broken heart and lack of creativity to fulfill the gallery request. With two weeks till her show, Sam is offered the use of her uncle’s remote cabin in the woods by Harob Lake. With painting supplies in hand, Sam ventures into the woods in hopes that the tranquil atmosphere will rejuvenate her spirit. But as the days pass, Sam begins sensing she is not alone. When her paintings begin taking on a dark and deadly pattern, Sam is terrified that perhaps there is more to the stories of the disappearing hikers…perhaps there is someone hunting the woods around Harob Lake…or perhaps it is something… Dead Lake is a super quick horror story that could easily become your new scary campfire tale! Really enjoyed and will be on the lookout for more creepy reads from this author! **I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. **
