Eragon Book Review

Three stars. Eragon, A novel by Christopher Paolini, is the first book in a series called "The Inheritance Cycle". In this book, we explore Paolini's imagination in the wonderful world of Algagäesia. In the beginning, we meet a farm-boy protagonist named Eragon. Eragon eventually comes across a blue sapphire stone that he takes home. In the middle of the night, the stone hatches a baby blue dragon. Eragon takes this dragon under his wing, naming it Sapphira. This dragon eventually grows very large and mentally connects with Eragon. They now share a mind. Eragon wants to learn how to become a dragon rider, and he meets a man named Brom who helps him on his journey. Eragon embarks on a life-changing journey to extinguish the forces of evil in Algagäesia, such as King Galbatorix who rules over the empire with an iron fist. My favorite part of this book is when Eragon and company visit the city of Teirm, which is depicted as a coastal city with buildings getting taller from the outside to the inside. This part of the book reminded me of a place like Mont St. Michel in France, which I have visited before. I really enjoyed how Paolini constructed this new world in the first book, but I didn't really enjoy this book so much. Going into this book as someone who isn't a huge fan of fantasy novels, I found it tedious to read at times. It is a little confusing to navigate Paolini's imaginative world of Alagäesia. I felt that some parts of this book were dragged out a little and there are a lot of unanswered questions in this first novel. But maybe the next couple of books in this series will answer those questions. Like many, I would prefer a more realistic subject for a book, and Eragon is far from that. Although, I wouldn't judge this book because of my personal preferences. It is very well written and can be enjoyable to read at times. I believe this book is comparable to the novel, Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer, by Rick Riordan. Another fantasy book which I've read. They both explore a fantasy world that I am not familiar with, but make it an interesting journey along the way. Overall, I think this book is very good, but simply isn't for me.

Reading with my son

My 11yo started reading this and asked me to. I typically like GRRM books, but even though this book is for a younger audience, I am enjoying it.

Love!

I know that many people love to hate on this book, feeling that it is a poor rendition of the already tried-and-true Lord of the Rings. I’m the naysayer. The Hero’s Journey trope that was the foundation of the LotR books is very much present in Eragon. As it is in most high fantasy. That being said, that’s where the similarities end for me. The writing style is very different, the feeling of it is very different. I’ve read it a few times, and I love falling into the story every single time. The world-building is great, the story is absorbing, and the characters are interesting. It’s everything I need from a fantasy read.

Definitely recommend if you like long books

I *love* lore-heavy, slow burn fantasy books. This book was right up my alley, and the rest of the series is amazing. Eragon is a very well written character, so is Saphira and the whole cast.

The rest of the seires is not as good as the fist

I really loved this book. I feel the way Eragon did with the details the author put into the story. But I was disappointed with the rest of the series but I still love the book and would read it all over again.
