A necessary read to get to the better books
Nevernight follows the story of Mia Corvere, the daughter of a ruined and executed family, as she seeks revenge for her families demise. After appearing at the door of a retired assassin following her own escape from death, she begins her journey to train with the Republics elite group of assassins. Through a series of unfolding events, we learn of the secrets of her past, and the steps she’ll need to take to achieve her desired future. Ultimately, I enjoyed the series. However, I felt the first book lacked a certain something. Kristoff did an incredible job building a robust world for Mia to exist in. But through that, he lost some of the character building that could’ve been completed in the first book. I feel that he focused so much on setting up the world in which Mia existed, and the history of this world, that he didn’t do a well enough job showing us why we should even care about Mia. The reason I continued reading was not my love for any of the characters, but instead my curiosity of which direction he would be going with the plot. If the plot and world were not so well done, this would’ve been a DNF for me. Additionally, I felt the pacing was a little slow to start. With his focus on world building and setting up Mia’s history, Kristoff takes his time getting to the meat of the story. It wasn’t until halfway through the book, when Mia enters the Red Church, that I felt like the pace picked up. Also, I did not like his use of italics to indicate when he was describing scenes from the past. This sentiment also applies to the use of footnotes. This, however, is completely personal preference and not something that kept me from reading the book. Some of the bombs he dropped near the end of the book were really what dragged me into the series. I felt myself wanting to know what happened next, and respecting his blatant disregard for the what feels like unspoken rule of not killing off liked characters. Overall, I would suggest that others read this book. Not necessarily because this one was exceptional, but more so you can move on and read the second and third books in this series.

I couldn't put it down
This book....grabbed me by the lapels and shoved me down the the nevernight rabbit hole. I absolutely loved it. I don't know what I was expecting, but now I'm obsessed. This series needs all the hype. Intense, witty, and a little bit of *spice*. This series is definitely going to be a reread. it's a 10/10 for me.
