Beautiful but disappointed

I bought this for my son for Christmas. It is absolutely beautiful. The length of the chain is perfect for a man. My son is 6 ft and husky and the chain goes to the middle of his chest. However, the beauty of this chain did not last. In less than six months, the gold has rubbed off and the chain in particular looks like a mixture of gold and silver. I thought it would continue looking gold - at least much longer than 4-5 months.
