Great story!

Badger lives in his Aunt Lula’s brownstone. He is a rock scientist. He likes to work on his rocks everyday.. he has turned his living room into his lab for studying and working with his rocks. Badger has become very set in his ways. When someone knocks on his door, he tries to ignore it. Finally he realizes whoever is at his door is not leaving, so he answers his door. Much to his surprise there is a skunk at the door. Skunk realizes that Badger wasn’t expecting him. So Skunk asks if he got Aunt Lula’s letter about him coming to live with Badger. Badger says yes as he doesn’t want to admit that he has not been reading her letters. Badger puts Skunk up in a closet for his room. Will Skunk stay with Badger? Will Badger let him stay? Skunk and Badger have much to learn about each other. Badger is given a surprise from Skunk. Badger doesn’t like his surprise. What will Badger do? The author has written a charming book. It gives one a look at friendship when each character has different ways of living life. It’s also about responsibilities, conversations about hurts given by accident, and learning to appreciate their differences. The illustrations are perfect. I enjoyed reading this story so much that I will be looking forward to reading the next book when it comes out. Badger and Skunk are great characters!

squee! so cute!

I'm about to use two words to describe this book that I don't often use: charming and delightful. This gave me all the feels; it's warm and cozy, it's rich and delicious, it made me laugh, it made me tear up- it moved me, y'all. It brought back memories of the anthropomorphic animal stories I loved as a child- Winnie the Pooh, The Wind in the Willows, Old Mother West Wind stories, Frog and Toad- and gave me those same warm fuzzy feelings. Badger has been living alone and gotten set in his ways, when he gets a surprise- a new roommate! Skunk is the breath of fresh air (pun not exactly intended) Badger's life needs, but will Badger be able to see this? Will the two be able to get used to each other and get along? Where do I find a floofy orange chicken to be friends with? When is the next book out? I want more Skunk and Badger! #SkunkandBadgerSkunkandBadger1 #NetGalley

A wonderful story about two unlikely friends!

We received a copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Badger lives a quiet and lonely life in his Aunt Lula's brownstone in North Twist and fills his days with 'Very Important Rock Work' until the day that Skunk shows up with permission from Aunt Lula to live there. Badger doesn't want a roommate, especially not a skunk that might spray or mess with his things or invite one hundred chickens to tea, but Badger soon learns a lesson in humility, sacrifice, and friendship. This is a humorous but heartwarming story about two rather different creatures forced into rooming together, with some funny and not-so-funny consequences. Badger is rather fond of his solitude and isn't at all thrilled by the new houseguest and his rather exuberant cooking or his need for more space. But Badger soon realizes that his way isn't the only way and a true friendship is born. With the fantastic message of unity mixed with Jon Klassen's lovely illustrations, this story has a truly classic feel to it and I wouldn't mind coming back to it in the future! I hear this is the start of a series as well and am looking forward to reading more about these two!

Hilarious and Charming Odd Couple Friendship Book

Skunk and Badger is a delightful odd couple friendship book for young readers. This book has the feel of a classic, like Winnie-the-Pooh or Frog and Toad, its timeless. Young readers will find the scenarios laugh out loud funny and will fall in love with these two unique friends. Skunk and Bader are both quirky, unusual creatures, each charming in their own way. Its heartwarming to see their friendship develop, and how the friendship makes each a better animal. The illustrations by Jon Klassen add to the appeal of the book, giving it a Winne-the-Pooh meets Wes Anderson vibe. I hope to see more books about Skunk and Badger. This is a great read aloud for all ages.

Delightful read

Skunk turns up at Badger's thinking he has a place to live but Badger did not read Aunt Lula's letters telling him about the arrangements. Badger feels Skunk is a distraction he does not need or want. But living with Skunk opens up Badger's world until the stoat incident when Badger insults Skunk so that Skunk leaves. Badger begins to feel bad but justified until he has to explain it in a letter to Aunt Lula. Now what is he to do? I enjoyed this story. It opened my eyes to the prejudice we often don't believe we have. It also opened my eyes to how insulated we can become as we stay in our own safe little comfort zones. Once Badger had his eyes opened he realized how much he had missed and how small his world was. Taking the steps necessary to have Skunk come home makes the story. I liked how they worked it out including the chickens. This is a wonderful story with great illustrations sure to delight your children.

humor & heart-tugs with sweet morals all in one

My Thoughts First Thoughts When I first saw this book, I was immediately reminded of a childhood favorite The Wind in the Willows, and I knew I simply had to read this. The blurb reminded me other odd couples, and sweet reads, including the Frog and Toad series. And of course, both Wallace and Gromit as well as Winnie the Pooh as mentioned in the description. So of course NOTHING was going to stop me from devouring this read! What I Loved Simply put: Everything! This book is a delight. THE STORY ITSELF Amy Timberlake tells us of an unusual and heartwarming friendship, which is totally relatable, and teaches without being preachy or obvious about it. We meet Badger, perfectly content being all by his lonesome self in Aunt Lula’s brownstone, eating the same meal each time, and doing Important Rock Work. Little does he realize that totally extroverted Skunk is just outside, and Badger’s life too, one who feels that breakfast is the most important meal of the day; and who loves stories. Each one opens doors to new experiences and new things to learn for the other; and more importantly, friendships! WHAT IT LEAVES US WITH It shows that the words we use matter, so choose wisely; that it is OK to make mistakes and perfectly OK to say “I’M SORRY.” It teaches us not to judge others too quickly, for we never know what we might find; true friends, for example. The message of friendship and acceptance shine throughout this sweet read. And yes, the importance of a good (yummy) breakfast too!! THE CHARACTERS What is not to love about grunting, grumpy Badger (not really)? Or the effervescent Skunk? And I simply cannot forget the Chickens… they are everywhere, plus, they are quantum Chickens!! Then, there are those wonderful townspeople of this quaint town. I know I would love to know them better. THE ILLUSTRATIONS Jon Klassen’s illustrations are the perfect complement to the story. Beautiful, classic and whimsical, each one evokes and invites a cozy and nostalgic atmosphere that is just right. THE EVERYTHING ELSE - A quaint setting that takes you on journey to the woods, to rock-rooms, and to nostalgia filled towns with parks that fit every need (like reading trees, climbing trees, and of course swings and slides and such). - All those totally creative and cute names for places and people (well, animals) and things; like the New Yak Times Book Review, and more! - Humor and heart-tugs all in one. - Breakfast!! Can someone make me strawberry cinnamon muffins now? - A rock-room and a moon-room!! So of course, stuff to learn about rocks and the sky as well. - And more to love too.. (not just in this book, but this is the first in a series)!! In Summary Timberlake’s heartwarming and joyous writing accompanied by Klassen’s frame-worthy illustrations make this a great read for young and old alike. So, of course, you need to get it for that young reader (who am I kidding? yourself too!) And it is on sale September 15th!! Thank you to Algonquin Young Readers for providing me the physical ARC of this book; and for inviting me for the book tour. All opinions are my own.

An Unlikely Friendship

As I turned the pages of this utterly charming story, I couldn’t help think what a delight it would have been to read aloud with the whole family. The animal characters – Badger the Rock Scientists and Skunk the unwelcome guest – would surely have captivated my children (who as grown women are equally susceptible), and the combination of direct language and nuanced relationships would draw in any parent wrestling with how to convey important lessons. The story is simple on the surface: Badger’s hermit existence comes to a crashing halt when his Aunt Lula, owner of the brownstone in which he lives, also invites Skunk to move in. Skunk is not only irreverent to the Science of Rocks and friend and patron to many chickens, but quickly makes himself at home, plying Badger with home-cooked breakfasts as he gently but persistently confronts Badger with his prejudices and white lies. In the end, Badger takes a fresh look at how he has isolated himself, ignored the feelings of others, and done harm to a potential best friend. One of the most profound changes was Badger’s new-found ability to admit he was wrong and to apologize sincerely by changing his behavior. We could all learn from his example! Verdict: A book to read aloud with the whole family.
