Spectacular Must Read
What a spectacular collection of musings! Intelligent, lyrical, and wonderfully miscellaneous, THE ANTHROPOCENE REVIEWED is a crazy quilt of ideas perfectly presented in a cohesive whole. Described as “a deeply moving and mind-expanding collection of personal essays,” Green “reviews facets of the human-centered planet on a five-star scale.” It shouldn’t make sense, but trust me. It does. Listening to the author narrate the audiobook added to my appreciation. It reminded me of Columbus’s voiceover during the movie “Zombieland.” Green, like Columbus, presents his anxiety as something that both limits him and preserves his life. There are also lists, research, and remarkable vulnerability that made my soul smile. (Green even sounds like Jesse Eisenberg, but maybe because I played the book at 1.5x speed.) There were too many high points for me to detail, several of which sent me to Google to see for myself (Hiroyuki Doi’s Circle Drawings, Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance). I loved his stories featuring Amy Krouse Rosenthal, a remarkable talent I only discovered last month. (An example of books “speaking to each other” as described by @austinkleon recently.) On Air Conditioning, “Like an expensive painting or a fragile orchid, I thrive only in extremely specific conditions.” On sports (written during COVID), “I miss the luxury of caring about stuff that doesn’t matter.” “I’m the Vice President of Panic, and the President is missing.” (quoting Poet Paige Lewis) For every reviewer who pressed this marvelous book into my hands (ears?), THANK YOU. It was all that you promised and more. I give THE ANTHROPOCENE REVIEWED five stars. QOTD: Zombieland: Love it, Hate it, or “What are you talking about?” I read this audiobook on loan from the DoD MWR Library using the Libby App. (More book reviews on Instagram: ReaderByTheWater)
