THE USA TODAY BESTSELLER! "Remarkable debut. . . . (a) nearly flawless tale of loss, perseverance and redemption. "-Publishers Weekly, starred review Perfect for readers of Where The Crawdads Sing! Set in 1920s Mississippi, this debut Southern novel weaves a beautiful and harrowing story of two teenage girls cast in an unlikely partnership through murder. Ada promised herself she would never go back to the Trace, to her hard life on the swamp and her harsh father. But now, after running away to Baton Rouge and briefly knowing a different kind of life, she finds herself with nowhere to go but back home. And she knows there will be a price to pay with her father. Matilda, daughter of a sharecropper, is from the other side of the Trace. Doing what she can to protect her family from the whims and demands of some particularly callous locals is an ongoing struggle. She forms a plan to go north, to pack up the secrets she's holding about her life in the South and hang them on the line for all to see in Ohio. As the two girls are drawn deeper into a dangerous world of bootleggers and moral corruption, they must come to terms with the complexities of their tenuous bond and a hidden past that links them in ways that could cost them their lives.

Murder and survival in the 1920s deep South

It's an exciting read, and you feel drawn into the plight of both main characters. It's especially intriguing if you enjoy reading books set in the rural South. Hopefully, it will make it to the big screen.

Slow / Nothing memorable

I was really hoping to love this book but I just didn't. I forced myself to finish it but it was very bleh.. The story had so much potential but this book did not use any of its potential. It was very slow and drug on. The author tried to shove so much information in that there was not much room for the actual story. I have lived in the South my entire life and love Southern fiction but this book was not it.

Great descriptions of Mississippi

I bought this as a book club read. I loved the variety of scenery, characters, occupations and social status within Mississippi during the early 1900s.

An Unlikely Friendship in the Murky Swamps

Ada is the daughter of a dirt poor trapper living on the edge of Mississippi swamp. Her father is abusive and cruel and even more so when she comes back home pregnant and alone. Matilda is a sharecropper's daughter living in a shack with nothing they can call their own. A violent act brings these two young women together and they form a close friendship despite the different color of their skin and racial tension of the 1920's South. They help each other despite the danger and violence all around them. Ada has dreams of being a seamstress and Matilda just wants to head North where she can be free of the secrets. Historical fiction once again featuring tough women in tough times putting up with the men who have total control over their lives.
