A tremendous book
Dr. O’Connor has given a huge gift to those who grieve...which somewhere in time is all of us. In contrast to Kubler-Ross’ breakthrough book which looked at grieving as five more or less distinct stages (a sixth, finding meaning, was added by Dr. David Kessler), O’Connor explains what is happening in the brain when we love someone, and then the brain’s chaotic and excruciating process of adjustment to that person being gone. She uses information from fMRIs that show what the brain is doing (and trying to do) to process the world turning upside down. In addition to the fascinating and well-explained science of grieving, the author speaks very compassionately to the bereaved to “normalize” their experience and to offer ways of dealing with it. This book deserves to become a classic and a gift for those who still love someone who is gone.

A new way to talk about grief and grieving
Why does grief hurt so much? What is the connection between love and grief in our brain? Is there scientific research that can help me better understand my own grief, or the experience of someone close to me who is grieving? The Grieving Brain answers these questions, and more. Written in clear, accessible, and personable prose and a compassionate tone, Dr. O'Connor combines her own experiences of loss during her life and her 20 years of experience as a clinical psychologist and neuroscientist to create and share a deep understanding of what happens to our brains (and thereby, our bodies and minds) when a loved one dies. I enjoyed reading this book and learned a lot about grief and about being human.

A book for everybody!
With such a heavy topic, you'd think it would make a depressing read but that's not the case. The author's tone comes across as kind and caring, as if a friend is speaking directly to you about the neuroscience of grief and grieving (yes, these are 2 separate things). The topic is incredibly timely given that almost everyone has lost someone they love during the pandemic. Even if you are not the person who has lost a loved one, reading this book will help you know how better to relate to those who are still in the depths of their grief. In that way, this book is for everyone - the grievers, and those who want to better support their friends/family/loved ones in their grieving process. TL;DR: A+ would definitely recommend!
