Incredible Read!

This book was one of the most riveting things I ever read, and I read a lot. The story was unique and grabbed me from the very start. I loved how the story of Fawcet was juxtaposed with the author’s journey. I loved how this shed light on the Indians of the Amazon, detailing how the various tribes live, a rare subject. I loved the vivid descriptions of the Amazon. I truly felt teleported to the time and place. I couldn’t put this book down and finished it in about a week. I highly recommend this book and this author. I also enjoyed The Wager, but this book surpassed that one for me.

Intriguing blend of history and adventure

David Grann (who is quickly becoming my second favorite non-fiction writer, after Jon Krakauer) investigates the unresolved history of Percival Fawcett, a turn-of-the century British adventurer who explored the Amazon a number of times. Most notable among Fawcett’s explorations was his final trip through the Amazon in search of a legendary lost civilization (Z)—a trip from which he, his son, and his son’s best friend never returned. Grann himself follows Fawcett’s trail through the jungle, yet his adventure is more ethnographic, sociocultural, and journalistic than Fawcett’s, as Grann never had to contend with the maggots, poisonous snakes, and various other infections that befell Fawcett and his co-adventurers (although Grann did not escape the ever-presnet mosquitoes and gnats). Thus, the book intersperses snippets of Grann’s investigation throughout the main narrative of Fawcett’s life and adventures, including the sad consequences his obsession wrecked on his surviving family members, especially his long-suffering wife Nina. Both educational and exciting, Grann’s narrative—fueled by his energetic prose
