An uplifting mystery

In Nita Prose’s debut novel, “The Maid”, perfectionist Molly Gray works at The Grand Regency Hotel in London. As she is neurodivergent, Molly relies on her grandmother to interpret the world for her, because sometimes she struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. When her grandmother dies, Molly is left to navigate life's complexities by herself. It’s not long before her orderly life is upended when she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, and is shocked to find him dead. Molly is accused of his murder. Caught within a web of deception and suspicion, Molly unites with her friends to find out what really happened to Mr. Black.  Molly, as a maid, is someone who exists in plain sight but is so often treated as if she is invisible. The hotel illustrates somewhat of an upstairs/downstairs sensibility. The guests live in luxury while the workers toil in relative obscurity, unseen and largely unacknowledged. “The Maid” is a book about what it means to be the same as everyone else but entirely different. It’s a slightly unusual mystery as it can only be solved by a connection to the human heart. Ultimately, it is an uplifting story. I recommend it. CW: Murder, bullying, terminal illness, suicide, grief, domestic abuse, physical abuse, ableism, gaslighting.

A fun read!

This book is full of twists and turns, as well as intriguing mysteries full of villains and potential murders. The author did a great job of telling a story from a different perspective. I actually did guess who the murderer was, but I wasn't completely sure until the very end. I highly recommend it to all lovers of crime and suspense.

Loved it

This was genuinely a delightful story about a sweet simple maid who wants to just do her job cleaning rooms at a hotel. She is startled when she enters a room and a hotel guest is not alive. It brings to light different people she meets a long the way while doing her job and keeps you guessing who could have caused the incident. A couple of surprises happen to keep this storyline very interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Did the maid do it?

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read a copy of The Maid. This book was written different than any other book I've read (as in the way the character speaks). This was an easy short read. I flew through the pages to see if it was going to end as I had predicted. Even though it kept you guessing you could see how it was all going to play out.

wow such an amazing read

This was such a brilliant read. Its not often that you find a main character molly who is obviously autistic and it was a joy to read. I could also relate to molly being autistic myself. It was such a fantastic story line that I could not put this book down so I read it all in one sitting. This book was so well wrote that I was hooked from the first page. The characters were wonderful in depth and realistic. The descriptions, development of characters and plot just had me on the edge of me seat and I felt so involved in the stories development. The ending wow! It was so unexpected. I thought the author created the most perfect , interesting and most fulfilling book that I have read in a long time. Only a few little bits in the book was easy to work out the rest I had no idea they really surprised me. My jaw nearly hit the ground at times. This book is brilliant for those who like lots of twist and turns it will definitely keep your mind very busy. I just can't recommend this book enough. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did an amazing job at getting the tone and flow correct for molly as this was a very important detail. This book is definitely in the running for ladyreading365 audiobook of the year. Only the highest of praise goes out to the author and publishers for creating such an amazing precise and intricate story. I will definitely be looking out for more books by this amazing author.

Underwhelming

This book definitely didn't live up to the hype. I read this book because of the almost 46,000 reviews on Amazon and other rave reviews. I wanted it to be so much more then than it was; a flat, underwhelming plot and a meh ending. Thankfully the book was only 285 pages, so I didn't invest that much time.

Character-driven cozy mystery

Although marketed as a mystery, The Maid is a character-driven book. After reading it, you’ll never forget punctual, routine-based, extra cleanly, follow-the-rules, socially awkward Molly the Maid. She has a good heart and is trying to make her way in the world (and on her own for the first time). I particularly liked the memories of her Gran and the funny little sayings Molly cherishes and repeats. The best part of The Maid is what’s revealed near the end and a sweet new beginning for Molly - a young woman you can’t help but root for! 3.5/5 stars. Thanks, NetGalley.

A Fun Mystery

Nita Prose’s debut novel, The Maid, is a fun, sometimes frustrating, mystery told through the eyes of protagonist Molly Gray, a young woman with a great eye for remembering detail, but a sometimes comical ignorance when it comes to nuance. Molly is a maid at an upscale hotel, who happens upon a dead body during the course of her work. She quickly ends up at the top of the list of suspects and has to work to unravel the mystery before it’s too late. This book has a great cast of characters—memorable, but not over-the-top. Even if the reader struggles to identify with Molly’s own personality, her backstory and relationships (especially with Gran) help her become a much more sympathetic character as the story unfolds. Through this book, the reader sees more than Molly does, but not much more. Neither protagonist or reader is sure who can be trusted, though the reader becomes suspicious much earlier than Molly does. Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was a quick read, filled with memorable characters, an interesting plot, and an intriguing mystery. It was sad, funny, and surprising.
