Terrible

Dnf!!!! I really just read a 13 year old girl giving it up to a 16 year old boy for whatever she wanted in his store…yuck….Yes, Evelyn it was your fault, you didn’t have to go to that store. “And then Ernie said, ‘Sweetheart, are you sixteen?’ I was fourteen, remember. But do you know what I did? I said, ‘why, I just turned.’” Evelyn looked at me with purpose “Do you understand what I’m telling you? When you’re given an opportunity to change your life, be ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen.” So lie to a man about your age & then what?? Cry about him being a pedaphile after you get what you want?? “I didn’t want anyone; that was the problem. To be perfectly blunt , I’d started to figure my body out quickly. I didn’t need boys in order to feel good. And that realization gave me great power. So I wasn’t interested in anyone sexually. But I did want something. And that’s what I traded my virginity for. A ride to Hollywood.” So she lied about being underaged to a man & married him!? Wtf is wrong with her! Saying her first husband isn’t smart WHEN SHES THE IDIOT TOO! “I think he knew enough to grab the chance when it swung his way.” Girl!! You used him to for status! What a hypocrite. This book is disgusting & woke & all the negative reviews are saying it’s not woke enough !? What a tragedy our society has become! Evelyn was the problem, not reading more because I know exactly where the storyline is going. White man bad! Gay people are worshiped! Evelyn used men with her sexuality, those men are bad, & she’s the victim still!

Incredible!

Historical fiction isn’t typically my first choice, so I went into this book with no expectations—and wow! What an extraordinary story of love, loss, family, fame, and fortune, all told with stunning writing. I honestly don’t know if any book can surpass this one. Hands down, this is one of the most incredible books I’ve read as an adult—possibly even the best.

Unexpected Truths and Emotional Revelations

3 ⭐️ The plot twist, in the end, was so shocking. I was not expecting that at all. I felt so bad for Monique, but I was also happy that Evelyn decided to find her and tell her everything about her dad.

Felt Bored

While I appreciate the setting and struggles that the characters are going through for the time period, it felt a little flat and slow for me. I also felt bored while reading it.

Addictive story

Evelyn’s forbidden romance had highs and lows but was ultimately a story of growing, healing, and trying again. I adored Evelyn’s genuine lifelong relationship with Harry. Their friendship and support was beautiful in marriage and outside of it. Evelyn is a flawed character but her ruthless ambition was never too much to make her completely unlikable. Monique toed the line, balancing her own integrity and ambition well enough to be complex and interesting. At the very beginning, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book since there was so much initial focus on physical beauty and thinness, but I was soon addicted to Evelyn’s story and how Monique navigated the reveals that I kept listening for long periods of time. Minor spoiler: I was bothered at the end, when Monique received the final reveal, how quickly she reassigned blame instead of letting it be a bit muddled. The character Monique completely absolved of blame had some agency in the situation; he could have gotten a cab instead of stayed with someone unsafe. I felt it was more complex than her reaction of “he’s innocent.” Overall, an enjoyable audiobook.

Hands were glued

I was unable to put this piece down. I finished it in two days and all I could say is WOW. There were unexpected turns and heartbreaks that had my jaw to the floor. Topics like assisted suicide, the LGBTQ movement, and abortion is spoken about. Another important lesson about family and a different perspective on love as well. I could not stop crying towards the end of the book. Would 100% recommend to a friend.
