Wow. I was not expecting this novel to pack the gut punch that it did. After reading one of this author’s previous Marvel books, Loki, I was expecting an interesting ride but nothing special. The Winter Soldier: Cold Front did not meet those expectations, it exceeded them. Slow to start with some extra effort necessitated to figure out WHICH Bucky this is (I’ll save you some time: he’s not the MCU Bucky we all know and love, at least in point of origin, but he IS comics Bucky who is just as lovable and tragic) and a bit of glossing over what drives him, this novel develops into a intense spy novel where the tension comes from knowing the end (or rather, both ends as this is told through two different timelines). The result is an absolutely heartbreaking story of a man who always tries to do what’s right, regardless of “sides,” and who has his agency completely stripped away. It’s a dive into the question of who we are at our core, and if that can ever really be manipulated or stolen. Though, like I said, this isn’t a story of MCU Bucky, it very well could be. And so the final chapters of this book left me crying on the train ride home from work. Pick this one up and just stick with it through the first third. I promise it’s worth it.

Bucky's back story
Title: The Winter Soldier: Cold Front Author: Mackenzi Lee Ch: 25 Pg: 416 Genre: retelling, comic Rating: 5 stars Publisher: Marvel Press I liked The Winter Solider: Cold Front by Mackenzi Lee more than I thought I would. I loved her Mackenzi Lee combined comic Bucky with MCU Bucky to give readers a Bucky unique to this book. And she did a great job of taking the best from the comics and the movies. I loved that it was dual time. We get both Bucky before the war and Winter Soldier Bucky. While the reader gets some closure for one timeline. The book ends on a cliff hanger, at least to this reader. And gives me hope that we will get a sequel. And of course, Winter Soldier Cold Front reminds me yet again while Bucky is my favorite. I received a copy of this book from the publisher through netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

Heartbreaking and Riveting
Bucky Barnes is my favorite character in the Marvel universe, so when I found out Lee's next book was on the Winter Soldier, I was both thrilled and trepidatious. Ultimately, it surpassed all my expectations. This is a book about a prisoner of war that never stops fighting. It's a story of heartache and horror, with brief, shiny moments of adventure and charm. And as with her previous Marvel novels, Lee's original characters are compelling and make their own mark upon the world instead of just playing second-fiddle to the pre-established star characters. Of course, as the reader knows from the outset, there's no happy endings in the 1950s for Bucky Barnes. Lee pulls back the Iron Curtain, bearing witness to his terror, and lets us keep him company for a short while. Remember that eventually, he will break free.
