Green straps don't last

Within 5 minutes of packing my bag for an overseas trip (>5 kgs was in it), the green loop at the top of the bag between the two straps broke. It was too late for me to make other arrangements so I took the bag on a 2.5 week hiking adventure. No other damage occurred. I am just confused as to why Travelon would use such flimsy and easily breakable material on a bag that is marketed for outdoors.
