Cheese Knife Set

Even the simplest event with the barest of menus can be transformed into an elegant affair to remember with the addition of a cheese tray. These simple hors d'oeuvres are universally enjoyed and are far quicker, easier and cheaper than elaborate cheese balls and puff pastries. The key to a successful cheese platter is to serve a variety of cheeses—at least three. Offer a few attractive cracker selections and serve it on attractive serveware, including a quality cheese knife set.

A cheese knife set may include the knives only or may come with a cutting board. Most cheese boards are made of wood, ceramic or marble. All of these materials are durable and easy to clean, so choose the one most attractive to you. To round out your offerings, consider a few service bowls filled with offerings of both salty and sweet snacks. Peanuts, pretzels and chips make great salty additions, while mints, chocolates and cookies make good sweet choices. For larger foods like cookies, consider a large, flat service plate instead of bowls.

For parties where adults will be served, consider setting the cheeses on the board and allowing guests to slice their own. If children will attend, it may be advisable to set out the cheese already cut. Do this no more than an hour before serving time to avoid a crust forming on the cheese. Toothpicks are a great way to allow guests to pick up the cheeses they desire without having to include knives on the service tray. Toothpicks are available in tons of fun colors, and even come in themes for special types of parties and events.

There are several types of cheese knives to choose from, and it's a good idea to have one of each type so you aren't limited in the types of cheeses you serve. Sharp tips or forked tips are designed to split the rinds of cheeses like Brie, Parmesan and Romano. Soft cheeses are best cut with dull knives. Cheese knives made for soft cheeses are about as sharp as a butter knife and are available in many different styles. Sometimes cheese knives have holes cut in the blade to prevent soft cheeses from sticking to the blade.

Cheese knife set selections are available by Michael Aram, The Cellar, Certified International and others. Cheese service sets are often available with wine service sets, including a corkscrew and bottle stopper. These sets offer everything you need to turn a simple gathering into a fine affair and make excellent gift ideals. Cheese service sets are appropriate wedding gifts, housewarming gifts, and gifts for coworkers and friends.
